Knives embrace a unique appeal for many. The knife is considered one of the most significant tools to have with you for many tasks either on the job or outdoors use. If you are in the need for a knife for outdoors use, such as for fire building, shelter building, hunting and prying you need a knife that holds it’s edge well, is easy to sharpen and can endure the elements. As far as blade steel is concerned, many have a preference for high carbon steel because it can be easier to sharpen. But high carbon steels downside is it can start to rust in high moisture environments so therefore requires more maintenance. For this reason many prefer a stainless Steel blades if working in wet and salty environments for ease of care, although a stainless blade can be somewhat harder to sharpen.
Being you could expect a knife used for survival or general outdoor use to be employed for a great variety of tasks to include being used to spit wood by batoning it, you should have a knife with a full tang. Although the Mora knives have a partial tang and are very durable and respected for their outdoors use, they are not designed for really hard use.
You should have a blade length of at least a minimum of four inches, but if you have a blade that gets too long, you will be dealing with carrying extra weight. There are some folding knives that can be great as a backup survival knife but don’t expect them to take a lot of abuse.
